Jack O’Lantern Pizzas

This week in Kids Kitchen we made a kid favorite recipe – Pizza!  But for some Halloween Fun, we made Jack O’Lantern Pizzas.  We chopped olives, zucchini, and bell peppers to make eyes, noses and mouths.  We kneaded our own dough, added sauce and cheddar cheese (instead of mozzarella because it’s orange), then used our toppings to make our faces. 

Because we made personal-size pizzas, they only took 10 minutes in the oven!  Deliciosa!

  1. Ingredients
  2. 1 3/4 cup spelt flour or white-whole wheat
  3. 1 envelope yeast
  4. 1/2 tsp. salt
  5. 2/3-cup warm water
  6. 2 tbsp. olive oil
  7. Additional flour for kneading
  8. 1-cup pizza sauce
  9. 1-2 cups mozzarella cheese
  10. Other toppings spinach, tomatoes, bell peppers, basil, mushrooms, olives, etc.
  1. Preheat oven to 425°F.
  2. Combine undissolved yeast and very warm water into bowl. Leave it alone for a little bit.
  3. Then, add the oil and salt and stir.
  4. Add 1 1⁄2 cup of flour and mix until well blended, about 1 minute.
  5. You can do this in a food processor or mixer but we did it by hand. Gradually add enough
  6. remaining flour to make soft dough.
  7. Dough should form a ball and will be slightly sticky.
  8. Knead on a floured surface, adding additional flour if necessary, until smooth and elastic,
  9. about 4 minutes. Pat dough with floured hands to fill pizza pan or baking sheet. (Can use
  10. parchment paper.)
  11. Form a rim by pinching the edge of the dough. Spread with pizza sauce.
  12. Top with desired toppings and sprinkle with cheese.
  13. Bake on lowest oven rack for 10-12 minutes for large pizza and about 8 minutes for mini-
  14. pizzas, until cheese is bubbly and crust is browned.
