About the Owner and Founder, Leah Smith, RDN, LD:

I am a native Texan, and have lived all my life in the Greater Austin area. Professionally, my career as a registered dietitian and nutritionist, did not begin by teaching cooking classes, but it has always been kid-nutrition focused. I first began by educating parents of infants and preschoolers about the importance of nutrition in even the youngest of children. Through my work, I fostered good nutrition awareness in various communities in central Texas. My focus shifted to children of all ages, as my own children grew. I have 2 children which are both elementary students and take their lunches to school (almost) everyday. You can visit our Lunch Box page for photos of creative, healthy lunch box ideas!

I developed Kids Kitchen and Chefs Club to educate, encourage, and excite families about getting their own kids into the kitchen to create a love of cooking healthy foods. I am a firm believer that teaching kids about what foods are good for us and why, and enabling them to create recipes on their own will have a positive impact on their life-long eating habits. Start right, stay right! If we empower them to choose healthy foods at a very young age, then, as they become independent, they will make healthier food choices for fueling their bodies with.

Your child will be excited about foods you never thought they would try! I look forward to sharing my cooking class stories and recipes with you, as well as the recipes we try at home.

Meet Our Team:

FullSizeRenderMargaret Horany, Instructor, Certified Holistic Health Coach, Personal Chef

I learned early in life that food is love. Coming from Lebanese and Italian decent, all of our family functions center around the kitchen. Both of my grandmothers and my parents introduced me to a variety of delicious and nutritious food, and instilled in me a passion for carrying on traditions and creating new dishes.

After high school, I moved to Austin to study at the University of Texas. I graduated with a degree in Health and Fitness promotion, and continued my education with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition where I received my Holistic Health Coach certification. I work in a wellness center where I am able to educate clients about maintaining long term health. I also cater special events, and love providing prepared meals for individuals who are working towards a healthier lifestyle.

I am so thrilled to be a part of the Kid’s Kitchen team, and am extremely grateful for the opportunity to share my knowledge and love for food with families in my community. It makes me so happy to see the excitement and joy these kids bring to class. Outside of the kitchen, I enjoy growing my own food in my backyard garden, traveling, exploring, dancing, music, yoga, and of course spending time with my family, friends, and sweet dog, Benny.

Kids Kitchen employee pics-1Paige Balius, Instructor, Certified Personal Trainer

I have worked as a personal trainer since 1998, helping adults achieve their fitness goals. It wasn’t until my son was born that I became passionate about kids’ health and fitness. I started volunteering my time with the PTA Healthy Lifestyles program in Round Rock ISD in 2008, and that path eventually led me to Leah and Kids Kitchen. Right from the start, I knew she had a brilliant idea. What better way to get kids to eat a variety of healthful foods than to teach them how to cook? I had to get involved. Fortunately, Leah needed passionate instructors to help accommodate the increasing demand for Kids Kitchen services, and I got my dream job!

In my spare time, I love to run, swim, dance, hike, read, travel, and yes, cook. I am also a Facilitator for The Happy Kitchen®, a program of the Sustainable Food Center in Austin, and am currently trying to become one of those people I’ve always wanted to be: a vegetable gardener.

Samantha De La Torre, Instructor, Professional Chef

It was a family friend who originally got me interested in cooking. We would watch cooking shows, make dinner, she made it an adventure. So when a rep from the Art Institute came to my high school and asked if any of us had ever thought about being a chef, I thought, “Well no, but now I am!” That sealed the deal, and after graduating high school, I left Austin to attend culinary school at the Art Institute of Dallas. Two years later, I graduated with an Associates of Applied Science in culinary, and moved back to Austin.

I spent some wonderful years working in the organized chaos of kitchens around town before returning to my original love of working with kids. As a nanny, I was introduced to three families who were open and warm and made me feel like I was a part of their family. It was actually the first family I worked for who turned me on to the idea of combining my two career loves, working with kids in a cooking setting. Then, I found Leah and Kids Kitchen and am loving every minute of it!

In my free time, I love to read, travel, watch cheesy Hallmark movies, and go on culinary adventures trying new places to eat around town.
